🎥 Interview with Tomeu on IB3: how to choose good firewood in Mallorca
IB3 visited Leñas Muntaner in Santa Maria to talk with Tomeu about the most common firewood types in Mallorca, how dry they should be and what to look at to know if you’re making a good purchase.

🎬 IB3 visits Leñas Muntaner as winter approaches
When temperatures start to drop in Mallorca, most homes do the same thing: get the fireplace ready and stock up on firewood to avoid feeling cold in winter.
On one of those busy days with queues to buy firewood, the IB3 team came to our yard in Santa Maria to talk with Tomeu about his work and about what really matters when choosing firewood.
In this 3-minute interview, you see a very typical scene: customers unsure about which logs to take, which type of wood to choose and how to know if the firewood they are buying is actually good for their fireplace or stove.

Here you can watch the interview broadcast on IB3, filmed at the Leñas Muntaner yard in Santa Maria:
🌳 Which types of firewood are mentioned in the interview?
During the conversation, Tomeu explains that they work with several typical Mallorcan hardwoods that are highly valued for fireplaces and wood stoves:
- Carob wood: dense firewood with good heat output, but less popular and less known by the general public.
- Olive wood: one of the most appreciated options, it gives excellent heat and long-lasting embers.
- Holm oak: another reference hardwood, ideal to keep a steady fire burning for hours.
- Almond wood: very common on the island, combining a nice flame with solid embers.
Tomeu comments that although carob is not requested as much, many customers mainly ask for olive, holm oak and almond, which tend to be the best-known and most used options in Mallorca.

💧 The key: dry and well-prepared firewood
One of the main points mentioned in the interview is the condition of the firewood. It’s not enough to choose a good species of wood: if the firewood is not dry, it simply won’t perform well.
Tomeu highlights two important ideas:
Drying time
Ideally, firewood should have between a year and a half and two years of drying time, to ensure that internal moisture has dropped enough.Proper storage
It’s crucial that the wood is not exposed to rain or direct moisture, and that it is stored in a ventilated place so it keeps its quality.
At Leñas Muntaner, the wood arrives in large logs and is re-cut, resized and prepared so that:
- It fits easily into the fireplace or stove.
- It is ready to burn without the customer having to do extra work at home.

🧾 How to know if you’re making a good firewood purchase
In the interview, the reporter asks Tomeu how a customer can tell if they are buying properly. Tomeu sums it up in a very simple way:
- Dry firewood: with enough drying time (1.5–2 years).
- Quality hardwoods: such as olive, holm oak and almond, which offer strong performance and long-lasting embers.
- Right log size: pieces that fit well into the fireplace, without needing much extra cutting at home.
- No excess moisture or dirt: not “soaked” or clearly exposed to the elements.
The scene in the report is clear: at first, the customer is a bit lost, but with Tomeu’s help they end up with a balanced mix of olive, holm oak and other hardwoods, ready to load and take home.

❄️ Conclusion: it’s not just about buying firewood, it’s about choosing well
IB3’s visit to Leñas Muntaner shows something simple but important: not all firewood is the same.
Choosing the right wood species, making sure it is dry and trusting an experienced local supplier makes the difference between:
- A fireplace that goes out easily, smokes and doesn’t heat properly, and
- A fire that lights quickly, gives strong heat and keeps glowing embers for hours.
